One of Indonesia's leading women painters, Roeliati was known for her sensitive observations of ordinary life. Rather than focusing on meticulous realism, she evokes atmosphere through spontaneous brushwork, harmonious compositions, and a restrained yet expressive palette. This approach invites viewers to experience the market as a living social space, revealing the close relationship between people, animals, and the natural environment that underpins Indonesia's agrarian culture. The painting entered the Museum of Fine Arts collection through a donation by Adam Malik in 1976.
