Bali Boat (Perahu Bali) demonstrates how batik evolved from a traditional craft into a medium for modern artistic expression. By combining the intricate techniques of batik-making with the creative language of painting, Amri Yahya and Sumihardjo expanded the new creation of the medium while remaining rooted in Indonesia's batik tradition.

 

In the early 1970s, both artists were among those exploring a freer and more expressive approach to batik painting. Dynamic brushwork, spontaneous compositions, and experimental design were integrated with the layered batik process of waxing, dyeing, and wax removal. The work reflects a pivotal moment when batik was increasingly recognised not only as a traditional craft but also as a medium for modern fine art. The artwork entered the Museum of Fine Arts collection through a donation by Adam Malik in 1976.
