The Tree depicts the the Tree of Life (Pohon Hayat), an important symbol in Javanese cosmology representing life, wisdom, and the interconnectedness of humanity, nature, and the spiritual world. Through this motif, Soedibio invites viewers to reflect on harmony and balance as essential aspects of human existence.

 

During the 1970s, Soedibio's work underwent a significant transformation, becoming increasingly poetic, decorative, and contemplative. Javanese spirituality emerged as a central source of inspiration, giving rise to a refined visual language rich in philosophical meaning. Pohon reflects the artist's exploration of inner life and his engagement with Javanese cultural values as a foundation for modern Indonesian art. The painting entered the Museum of Fine Arts collection through a donation by Adam Malik in 1976.
